The Troubling Politics of EMF Safety puts you at risk

Politics of EMF Safety - Gary NullHow much influence do cell phone and wireless companies have on the government EMF safety rules? A frightening amount, according to a recent guest post in Waking Times from Dr. Gary Null, PhD.

CDC rescinded EMF Safety Warning

Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control took back an EMF safety warning they had issued 18 months prior concerning the possible link between cordless phone radiation and cancer. According to the Environmental Health Trust, this retraction occurred around the same time the CDC hired Kenneth Foster — a researcher whose past work was funded by private wireless industry groups — as a consultant.

According to the Environmental Health Trust, this retraction occurred around the same time the CDC hired Kenneth Foster — a researcher whose past work was funded by private wireless industry groups — as a consultant.

Other medical professionals have criticized Foster’s published work for making “what appears to be a deliberate distortion of the science and a bold-faced effort to downplay potential risks to children using mobile devices.”

FCC writing regulations ignore radiation from small appliances

Furthermore, at the Federal Communications Commission, top industry executives have also played instrumental roles in writing up regulations (or the lack thereof) surrounding levels of radiation permissible by small appliances.

FCC Changed Recommendations for Cell Phones

Between 2009 and 2010, the FCC went from issuing a recommendation to consumers to “buy a wireless device with lower SAR,” or specific absorption rate, to “not endors[ing] the need for these practices.” Reportedly, these changes took place after a series of meetings between the FCC and the cell phone lobby group Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), which represents companies like Nokia, ATandT, and Motorola.

US is behind other developed countries on EMF Safety

These corporate interests leave the United States well behind other developed countries when it comes to government EMF safety procedures. France and Belgium both require cell phones to clearly display their SAR rating on their packaging. Israel, Austria, and Australia recommend limiting children’s exposure to WiFi. The United Kingdom also suggests that children be kept away from cell phones, and that all users keep phones away from their face.

But here in the U.S.? There seems to be little awareness about the EMF dangers tied to cell phone use, despite the fact that the global number of users has increased from two billion in 2006 to six billion in 2012.

We need to demand accountability and educate ourselves

“If we are to enact measures to protect against this dangerous radiation we must demand full accountability from the CDC and FCC,” writes Dr. Null. “It is time that Americans stand up to the anti-science corporate profiteers running the show and rein in this invisible danger in our midst.”
