EMF Refugee is Changing Conversations about EHS

Photo of EMF Refugee looking at city she's had to leaveHave you ever felt marginalized, mistrusted, or dismissed because of your electro-hypersensitivity (EHS)? If so, you’re not alone, there are many who consider themselves an EMF refugee.

What is an EMF Refugee?

“In a nutshell — it feels like unremitting, wired, electrified torture. It feels like I am fused with a force field, that I’m no longer human but part of a circuit. It feels like my body is pulsating to an artificial frequency,” writes Alison Main in her essay, “I Am an EMF Refugee.”

Main is a graphic designer and writer, and a summa cum laude graduate of Notre Dame University. She self-identifies as EHS, and details the struggles of finding both relief from the many high EMF side effects present in today’s society and acceptance of her condition among her peers.

Formerly living and working in New York City, Main began experiencing EHS in her mid-thirties after purchasing a synthetic material couch that magnified the WiFi radiation and laptop radiation levels circulating in her Manhattan apartment.

Since then, she’s moved from place to place, seeking refuge from her EMF exposure symptoms wherever she can. Even though it has been demonstrated that bioeffects can take place within minutes of cell phone or cordless phone use, she says people refuse to believe her condition is real. And she knows why.

“No one wants any of this to be true,” Main writes. “No one wants to imagine for a second that their digital devices might be harming them.”

Main shares how few of her friends or family members are actually willing to unplug for her health and safety. Some will secretly turn their WiFi back on while she’s there, just to see if she can feel it. And she does, every time.

The Silver Lining

Yet there is a silver lining: In migrating from place to place and talking about her condition, Main has met other EHS sufferers and developed a network to provide help, tips, and relief for other EMF refugees. It’s estimated that 3% to 5% of the national population suffers from EHS, but health officials are reluctant to take it seriously.

If you experience EHS or suspect you might be feeling the effects of EMF, consider investing in EMF blocking shields and other products, as needed, for your home, car, or workspace. These EMF shields can help block the effects of radiation and allow you to live a normal, healthy life without the hardships of severe bioeffects or becoming an EMF refugee yourself.
