Last weekend our carport mysteriously caught on fire in the middle of a blisteringly hot day. It was 105 degrees and without warning, something ignited under that carport and started a blaze.

When we reviewed the order of events it was obvious that Divine Intervention had occurred not once, but continuously over a period of several key hours, both before and during that blaze. I've often marveled at people who do not believe there is any divine presence in the Universe.  This story should convince even an eye rolling skeptic.

Miracle 1: Extra Watering....just a coincidence?
Early in the day, our neighbor, Brian, decided to soak his entire back yard, particularly several bushes near his home. It wasn't the normal watering day, but because temperatures were predicted to be over 100 for the next week, he decided to increase plant moisture levels. In fact, there was a sprinkler operating on the area right by the corner of his home that was closest to the fence that burst into flames as the carport fire started.

Secondly, though it was a Saturday, he happened to be working at his computer, and heard a crackling sound that signaled the beginning of this fire. When he looked up from his screen, the entire fence along the property line was on fire. He immediately called 911.

Miracle 3: Buddy, Dog Hero
Simultaneously, our Bichon Frise, poised at the top of a wingback chair where Dr. Brown was reading, was looking out the window - saw the flames and began to bark frantically, with a tone that was not his normal "there's a bird out on the lawn...." bark. Did I mention the dog is often napping up there, not looking out the window? Anyway, Dr. Brown looked up, and by now the truck was in flames.  After he called 911, he ran down and opened up the gate to the driveway so fire trucks could enter with no delay.

Miracle 4: Friend Looks Up at Just the Right Time
About a half a mile away, a friend of ours who works at a native plant nursery just happened to look up from her work, and saw a huge plume of smoke rising from what she thought was our property. She immediately contacted the nursery owners - who called 911, left customers to hop on their all terrain vehicles complete with a water tank trailer, to come and help us. Our friend ran over to our place, grabbed a hose, and helped Chaz (Dr. Brown) hose down a building across from the carport (which houses chickens) as well as the carport itself. OK, now here is another really big miracle.....

Miracle 5: The Grass Fire
When the nursery guys got to the end of their gravel road, a full one quarter of a mile from our place, they found a small grass fire smoldering. This grass was on the edge of a 2 acre pasture of dry grass with a barn a mere 20 yards from that fire. The fire captain later said he thought something had flown from  our carport ¼ of a mile to land in that grass. Had they not put that fire out, the whole neighborhood could have burned up - it was 105 degrees....and that fire would have spread faster than snapping your fingers. Did I mention there are acres of trees just across the road and behind that field? And homes all along this road?

The Final Miracle 6: Our Fire Department
Our fire department - where do even begin? These guys arrived in only 5 minutes - and attacked that fire with such precision that it kept the neighbors house from catching on fire ( a mere 15' from the burning fence), limited the damage to another storage building to just roof shingles, and hosed down 2 50' pine trees that got scorched, but we think will live another 50 years.  These guys had to wear heavy protective HOT clothing, and they just cheerfully sweated -enduring personal heat that would have most of us passed out!

The fire captain casually informed me that he was about to cook 1000 pounds of tri-tips at the county fair, but as soon as he got the call, he left to come fight our fire.  How can you even begin to thank people who serve in this way?  They came back 2 hours later - at 8:30pm on a Saturday night, just to check the fire. And the next morning at 9 a.m. as I was out in watering plants in my garden- that were undamaged because of the firemen, the captain came back to check again. You see, we found out he's a neighbor, living only few streets from us - and he just came by to see how we were doing. I handed him 10 cucumbers and a few onions...and said - "you think the guys at the firehouse might like some fresh vegetables?"

Gratitude and Learning
The whole experience was one in which we felt immense gratitude for all the miracles that had occurred  before, during, and after the fire. As a footnote, we've already had an arborist visit, and he has treated the trees with  an organic formula bored into the trees to fight insect attacks. He's confident all 3 big trees will be saved.  The chickens are fine, and no one was hurt.

The one thing we would do differently if there were ever another emergency at our home? We're going to have what's called a "Bug out" bag ready - sitting in the garage, ready to grab if we have to evacuate. This relatively small fire was a real eye-opener for several people in the neighborhood. What we learned is that you don't think very well when an emergency comes - and you certainly do NOT have 10 minutes to "get your things" if your house is on fire. You leave the house, and fight the fire! Or you get people or animals out. It's not a time where you will adroitly grab your vitamins, or prescription drugs, or family photos. Not going to happen.

One more coincidence....
For the past 3 week's Dr. Brown and I have been reading a book called 98.6%20Degrees:%20The%20Art%20of%20Keeping%20Your%20Ass%20Alive98.6, The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive, by Cody Lundin. While his emphasis is geared towards people who hike or backpack, this is a great guide for what to have in a "bug out" bag.  Even if you live in a city, it's a great book to read because it has practical advice in it, and might end up saving your life - or at least making it a lot more comfortable!

Dr. Brown and I wish to publically thank our friends, neighbors and our great firemen for all the help they have given us during and after this event. And a special thanks goes to our understanding neighbors, Brian and Karen, who have been nothing but gracious as they deal with the fire damage to their plants, hot tub and roof!
