Mobile phone or wireless DECT base radiation exposure to mice produces changes in proteome of several parts of the brain.
Journal of Electromagnetic Biological medicine studied brain responses to exposure to a mobile or wireless phone base radiation. Protein changes were found in the brain which may explain human health hazards: headaches, sleep disturbance, memory deficits.
First of all, what is proteome?
It's defined as the entire set of proteins expressed by a cell, tissue, or organism. In this research, we know they targeted cell tissue in specific parts of the brain: the cerebellum, hippocampus, and frontal lobe. Proteomes have many different appearances, but the drawing to the right shows and example the interconnection of cells parts and neurofilaments that make up a proteome).
What parts of the brain did they test?
The cerebellum is responsible for many functions in your body including spatial orientation, posture and coordination. It sits at the back of your head, tucked under your cortex, and just above your neck. The hippocampus is involved in the transfer of short-term memory to long-term memory as well as spatial navigation. It is deep in the center of your brain. Your frontal lobes, sitting towards your forehead, are responsible in part, for your motor coordination, planning, reasoning, judgment, impulse control and memory.Obviously, all these parts of the brain allow you to function fully and normally.
In this research, they split of the mice into 3 groups. The first group was exposed to a typical mobile phone with SAR readings of 0.17-.37. 3 hours a day for 8 months. The second group was exposed to a wirelss DECT (Digital Enchanced Cordless Phone) base telephone at a SAR level range of 0..12-0.028 W/kg for 8 hours a day for 8 months. The 3rd group consisted of the sham animals.
Results and Conclusions: The results showed that the long term exposure to radiation produced changes in the expression of 143 proteins. The observed changes might have affected brain plasticity - a key aspect of a healthy brain. They conjectured this might have been due to cell death, or oxidative stress on the nervous system.
